  In June 1997, Gregorian became12th president of Carnegie Corporation of New York, the grant-making institution founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1911. Previously, he was the president of Brown University for nine years and served as president of the New York Public Library from 1981 until 1989. Born to Armenian parents in Tabriz, Iran, Gregorian attended elementary and secondary school in Iran and Lebanon, respectively. Majoring in history and the humanities, he entered Stanford University in 1956 and graduated with honors in 1958. He earned a Ph.D. from Stanford in 1964. Gregorian has taught at San Francisco State College, the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania in 1972, where he was appointed Tarzian Professor of History and professor of South Asian history.

 The final concert of the series takes place on Sept. 11, when the guitar and harmonica duo Little Bit of Blues will perform. The pair, both Montgomery County natives, have played together for more than a decade.  The selections from the Scott papers included in Meeting of Frontiers consist of Kiowa stories that he collected while stationed at Fort Sill. The Eleanor L. Pray Album features images from Vladivostok in 1899-1901 and the life of an American merchant family living in the city at that time. It was created by Eleanor Roxanna Lord Pray (1868-1954), an American woman who lived in Vladivostok for 36 years (1894-1930). The album eventually was inherited by Pray's granddaughter Patricia D. Silver, who in 2002 donated it to the Library of Congress for scholarly use and digitization. The album offers a unique and private perspective on Russian and expatriate life at a crucial time in late-czarist Russia. Among the expatriates pictured in the album is Richard T. Greener, the U.S. commercial agent in the city at that time and the first African American graduate of Harvard College.

The couple established an antiquarian bookselling firm, H.P. Kraus Inc., in the early 1940s and did not close this legendary company until Hans Peter's death in 1988. Hans and Hanni Kraus generously donated their collection of Drake materials to the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress in 1980. The Poetry and Literature Center in the Library of Congress administers the home of the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry, a position that has existed since 1936, when the late Archer M. Huntington endowed the Chair of Poetry there. Since then, many of the nation’s most eminent poets have served as Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress and, after the passage of public law 99-194 (Dec. 20, 1985), as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. The Poet Laureate suggests poets to read in the Library’s literary series and plans other special events during his or her term in office.

  WHAT: From May 19 to May 28, two mobile recording booths in trailers will be stationed in front of the Library’s James Madison Memorial Building at 101 Independence Ave. S.E., Washington, D.C., as the first stop in their one-year tour to collect stories of ordinary Americans from across the United States. The oral histories that StoryCorps collects will be given in digital form to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which has a statutory mandate to “preserve and present American folklife.” StoryCorps is the first “born-digital” audio collection for the center, the largest oral narrative collection in the nation. StoryCorps is a national initiative to instruct and inspire individuals to record oral histories and create meaningful personal experiences for the participants.

 After master copies of a field-recorded song were sent to the record company’s factory, metal copies were created and then “stamped” onto shellac discs for commercial release. Occasionally, in addition to the mass production of the record, companies stamped just one copy for internal use by their staff, and these single stampings were known as test pressings. These pressings of a commercial 78-rpm are rare items because, in many cases, they are the only extant copy or the clearest copy. The Library’s acquisition also contains Driggs’ correspondence with Don Law, who recorded Johnson for Columbia and was able to give a first-person account of these recording sessions.

 On the occasion, the Library also launched a worldwide search to locate duplicates of volumes from the personal library of Thomas Jefferson that were destroyed by a second fire in the U.S. Capitol on Christmas eve in 1851. The project was supported by a gift of $1 million from Jerral Jones, owner and general manager of the Dallas Cowboys, and other donations from members of the Madison Council, the Library’s private sector advisory group. Plans are currently underway to publicly display Jefferson’s library in late 2007 when the Library unveils its New Visitors Experience, which will showcase the Thomas Jefferson Building and the Library’s physical and digital resources.
