 Despite more than 40 arrests, physical attacks and serious injuries, Rep. Lewis remained a devoted advocate for the philosophy of nonviolence. After leaving SNCC in 1966, he remained active in the civil rights movement through his work as associate director of the Field Foundation and his participation in the Southern Regional Council's voter registration programs. Rep. Lewis went on to become the director of the Voter Education Project (VEP). Under his leadership, the VEP added nearly 4 million minorities to the voter rolls. His first electoral success came in 1981 when he was elected to the Atlanta City Council. This past November, he was elected to his seventh consecutive term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Lewis co-wrote Walking with the Wind with Michael D'Orso, of Norfolk, Va. The title is based on one of Rep. Lewis's childhood experiences.

 Mr. Pinsky is the ninth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry and the 39th person to occupy the seat. Mr. Pinsky will continue to direct the popular Favorite Poem Project, which has for the past two years been collecting audio and video recordings of Americans from all parts of the country reading or reciting aloud a favorite poem. In April of 2000, which is the Library's Bicentennial and National Poetry Month, 1,000 audio and 200 video recordings will be presented to the Library. The Favorite Poem archives will be one of the Library's Bicentennial "Gifts to the Nation," and will illustrate what poetry means to Americans from many walks of life at the end of the century. The presentation will be made during a special Bicentennial conference on "Poetry and the American People: Reading, Performance, and Publication."

  Liane Brandon is an award-winning independent filmmaker and co-founder of New Day Films, the nationally known cooperative that has pioneered distribution of films about women and social change. She is a professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. "Betty Tells Her Story" will be shown with "Happy Mother's Day" (Richard Leacock and Joyce Chopra with Nancy Sen, 1964) and "Conversations with Willard Van Dyke" (Amalie R. Rothschild, 1981).  The 2000 Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry of the Library of Congress will be presented in October 2000 for the best book of poetry published by a living United States author during the preceding two years (i.e., during 1998 or 1999). The $10,000 biennial prize is given by the family of the late Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt of Austin, Texas, in her memory. She was President Lyndon B. Johnson's sister and, while a graduate student in Washington during the 1930s, was an employee of the Library of Congress, where she met co-worker and college student O.P. Bobbitt, whom she later married. The long campaign by which my father moved, successively, from conspiratorial co-worker to confidant to suitor, was partly played out in the indexing department of the Library. Sometime after my mother's death, my father and I decided to endow a memorial in her honor and, owing to the history I have described, the Library of Congress was suggested as a possible recipient of this memoriam. The Bobbitt Prize, a milestone in the Library's history, was the first such award given by the Library since, in the aftermath of controversy surrounding the Library's awarding of the 1948 Bollingen Prize to Ezra Pound for his Pisan Cantos

  In 1986, NBC donated more than18,000 16mm reels of programming to the Library of Congress. The vast majority of these are kinescopes represented as separate picture and sound track negatives. The Library's Motion Picture Conservation Center in Dayton, Ohio, has made composite prints of hundreds of titles in the NBC Collection -- including many specifically for this program -- thus ensuring their preservation. This series, which shows many of these new prints to the public for the first time, salutes the Library's efforts to conserve America's rich television heritage, a history that predates video technology. The 1950s were the key decade in bringing television to America. As the decade began, about one home in eight had a set. Ten years later, the figure was seven of eight. During the 1950s America changed from a land of radio listeners to one of television viewers. NBC -- along with CBS -- refined the types of television we could watch.

Interested patrons are encouraged to come to the Library by 6:30 p.m. on concert night to try to obtain no-show tickets at the door.  On March 16, the Library of Congress, in cooperation with the James Madison Commemoration Commission, will host a symposium to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of James Madison, the nation's fourth president. his role as architect and principal defender of the Constitution of the United States; his introduction of the legislation that produced the Bill of Rights; and his service as secretary of state in 1801-1809, and as president of the United States from 1809 to 1817. The all-day symposium, which will be held in Room 119 of the Thomas Jefferson Building, is open to the public without charge or advance reservation. The Library of Congress's James Madison Memorial Building, dedicated in 1981, is the nation's official memorial to the fourth president.

  The Library's representation of American art photography is particularly broad. The most recognizable among the first American art photographers or "pictorialists," as they called themselves, was Alfred Stieglitz, who gathered a coterie around himself, known as the Photo- Secession. The disbanding of that group in the mid 1910s coincided with the emergence of Clarence H. White (1871-1925) as the most influential American leader. His own photographs were the first purchased as art by the Library in 1926. White was an internationally prominent art photographer, who introduced comprehensive instruction in art photography to the United States. He inspired students through his personality and dedication to the principles and values of art. The formal school that he started in New York City flourished from 1914 to 1942, with summer sessions at Georgetown Island, Maine;

 The Caroline and Erwin Swann Foundation for Caricature and Cartoon, currently located in the Library of Congress, is again accepting applications for its graduate fellowship. The Swann Foundation awards one fellowship annually (with a stipend of $15,000) to support continuing scholarly research and writing in the field of caricature and cartoon. Completed applications are due February 15, 2002, and notification will occur in spring of 2002. The fellowship will cover the 2002-2003 academic year. To be eligible, an applicant must be a candidate for an M.A. or Ph.D. degree in a university in the United States, Since the fund encourages research in a variety of academic disciplines, there is also no restriction on which university department might oversee a project proposed for the fellowship, provided the subject pertains to caricature or cartoon art. In the interest of increasing awareness and extending documentation of Library of Congress collections, fellows are required to make use of the Library's collections, be in residence for at least two weeks during the award period.

  The American Folklife Center's "Homegrown" series is part of "I Hear America Singing," a Library of Congress project celebrating America's music. Yuqin Wang, Zhengli Xu, and their daughter Ke "Brenda" Xu, moved from China to Portland, Ore., several years ago, bringing with them their knowledge and love of Chinese puppetry. The family operates as a team, constructing puppets and set designs, choreographing and performing Chinese folk tales for schools and other audiences throughout the U.S. and abroad. Their international experience includes more than 30 years of performing throughout China and touring in Europe and South America. The art of Chinese puppetry dates back a thousand years, beginning as cultural ritual and then developing into a form of entertainment. Students of rod puppetry, such as Yuqin Wang and Zhengli Xu, study and practice for years to perfect their skills.

 The Library's leadership role in preserving its vast audiovisual holdings is also described in the new illustrated guide. The Library's establishment of a recording laboratory in 1940 and a motion picture repository during World War II not only captured the nation's cultural traditions, but also documented this seminal period in American history. The Library's collection of Armed Forces Radio Service 16-inch transcription discs complements its Office of War Information Collection,  the Library opened the Bob Hope Gallery of American Entertainment to honor the comedian on his 97th birthday and to preserve the work of the great popular American entertainers of the past century. In addition to the Bob Hope Collection, the gallery features highlights from such important collections as the Gwen Verdon-Bob Fosse Collection and the Danny Kaye and Sylvia Fine Kaye Collection. The Library responded to the tragic events of September 11 by increasing physical and computer security, providing Congress with timely information on terrorism and related topics, and by launching several projects to collect and preserve materials in all formats that document the attacks and the nation’s response to them. Peterson has been professor of music at San Francisco State University for more than three decades, and from 1992-1994 was a guest professor of composition at Stanford University. He has been active as a guest composer at the University of Indiana, University of Minnesota, Brandeis University, and the University of California at Santa Barbara. Peterson's works are recorded on CRI and Koch International, among other labels. In 1998, Peterson and San Francisco State University established the Wayne Peterson Prize in Music Composition, which they jointly continue to administer.

  "Some of our most treasured items are the letters written to family and loved ones during war," said Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, director of the Veterans History Project. Malcolm Harvey Stilson, World War II veteran, served as a clerk in Aircraft Erection in India and then was transferred to the Entertainment Production Unit, where he played the piano. Stilson submitted to the Library his 256-page memoir, "WWII as Seen Through the Letters of Malcolm and Warren Stilson." Malcolm Stilson writes to his parents from India: "Another difference of this country is that people here all use their heads a lot. I mean they carry everything on their heads, and, also, the women do most of the hard work. (Must tell Marilyn [his girlfriend] that; also add I wish she were here. She'll appreciate that.)

  The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world. Through its National Digital Library (NDL) Program, is also one of the leading providers of noncommercial intellectual content on the Internet. The NDL Program's flagship American Memory project, in collaboration with 36 institutions nationwide, makes freely available millions of American historical items.  This Valentine's Day, the American Folklife Center requests wartime love letters for the Library of Congress collection of veterans' oral histories through the Veterans History Project. the Society of American Archivists, the American Legion and other veterans groups-participate in the project. AARP is the founding sponsor of the project. Joseph J. "Jerry" Brenner of Columbia, Md., submitted 1,261 letters and v-mails sent between him and his wife, Norma, between December 1943 and December 1945. His letter dated June 6, 1944, from Camp Forrest, Tenn., reads, "At last it's started. We heard the news this morning and we haven't done much more than cluster around all available radios all day It's 10 to 9 and we are all going to listen to the President speak at 9 o'clock. The great news has raised my hopes considerably. I feel sure that this nightmare will soon be done with.

  Individuals, family members, veterans, civic groups and organizations that are willing to interview veterans are invited to contact the Veterans History Project, whose staff will provide guidance and information. The resulting audio or videotaped interviews and related documentary materials that are collected are preserved at the Library of Congress as part of the permanent record of the nation=s history. In addition to AARP, the founding sponsor, more than 570 organizations, including the Society of American Archivists, American Library Association, American Red Cross, Daughters of the American Revolution, WAVES National, and Women's Overseas Service League participate in the project.

 The set is available from the Library's Sales Shop for $37.  Libby Larsen, one of America's most prolific and most performed living composers, has been named to the Harissios Papamarkou Chair in Education and Technology in the John W. Kluge Center of the Library of Congress beginning in June 2003. The holder of this chair, which was established through a generous gift from Alexander Papamarkou (deceased 1998) in honor of his grandfather, addresses issues of education and technology that have an impact on the Library of Congress and the nation. As holder of the Papamarkou Chair, Larsen will work to connect music education organizations with artists to plan new ways for arts educators and world-class artist practitioners to work together.
