I believe in the past he has been fired twice from other roles for lying when he was vice-chairman and shadow arts minister and about an affair he had. He has to go just as Dominic Cummings went as did one or two other including Hancock when he snogged his girlfriend (unknown to his wife) in the office. This can't be swept under the carpet. Rosemary Newman you're right they should've been working cross-party during a pandemic. But that would've meant more scrutiny over contracts given out and their Tory mates wouldn't have had millions chucked at them to come up with inferior PPE, useless track and trace etc... there was too much to gain and too much to hide for the government to want to share the trough with other snouts.
