 The Bradley Lecture series is made possible by a grant from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation of Milwaukee. It is a showcase for the explication of texts of great historical importance to social and political thought by eminently qualified scholars. Previous programs featured discussions on Alexis de Tocqueville's Democracy in America by Professor Michael Kammen, Plato's Republic by Professor Martha Nussbaum, The Federalist Papers by Professor Bernard Bailyn, and Karl von Clausewitz's On War by Sir Michael Howard. Each lecturer analyzed the text, explained the circumstances of its creation, dealt with its ambiguities in treatment and historical understanding, drew out its central theses and addressed the degree to which its basic arguments remain essential today. Prosser Gifford, Library of Congress Director of Scholarly Programs, said the lecture series "has demonstrated persuasively the value of a close reading and re-reading of texts,

  Originally scheduled to open in the fall of 1996, the exhibition will have a three-month stay in Washington, and then travel to the Jewish Museum in New York and the Sigmund Freud-Museum and the Austrian National Library in Vienna. Additional venues may include California and Brazil. The exhibition will feature more than 170 vintage photographs, prints, films, manuscript letters and documents and first editions of many publications from the Library's collection of more than 80,000 Freud items donated over the past four decades by the Sigmund Freud Archive. These materials will be supplemented with loans from the Freud Museum in London; the Sigmund Freud-Museum in Vienna; and other important collections. "Sigmund Freud: Conflict and Culture" has been organized by the Library of Congress, in cooperation with the Sigmund Freud-Museum in Vienna and the Freud Museum, London. The curator is Michael S. Roth,

Symphony of the Night shirt

  which is a division of the American Library Association (ALA), in cooperation with the Genealogical Publishing Co. The award, consisting of a citation and check for $1,000, will be presented on June 29 during the ALA's Annual Conference in Washington. "Through her dedication to public service and to her profession, [Reid] has made outstanding contributions to reference librarianship and is an inspiration to her RUSA colleagues," according to an announcement of the award. As a senior reference specialist and head of the reading room, Ms. Reid is responsible for development of the Library's U.S. and foreign genealogical and local history collections. A frequent lecturer at national and international conferences, she is a recognized specialist in British Isles local history and genealogy. With a 1994 Fulbright Fellowship for Research Librarians, she spent three months in London and published the results of her research, Genealogical Research in England's Public Record Office:

 Two other Library employees are scheduled to receive awards from divisions of the ALA this summer. John D. Byrum Jr., chief of the Regional and Cooperative Cataloging Division (RCCD), will be presented with the Margaret Mann Citation for outstanding professional achievement in cataloging or classification from the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services; and Judith Reid, head of the Local History and Genealogy Reading Room, will receive the top award for genealogy librarians from the Reference and User Services.John D. Byrum, chief of the Regional and Cooperative Cataloging Division of the Library of Congress, will receive the 1998 Margaret Mann Citation from the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, a division of the American Library Association.

 the two- day conference will cover such topics as "Religion in 18th Century America," Thomas Jefferson and the separation of church and state, "Women and Religion in the Early Republic," and "The Influence of Christianity and Judaism on the Founders." Participants, in addition to Dr. Pelikan, are David D. Hall, Harvard Divinity School; John Witte Jr., Emory University School of Law; Thomas E. Buckley,  The Library of Congress will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the state of Israel with a lecture on "The Holocaust and the Founding of the State of Israel," by Hebrew University Professor of Political Science Shlomo Aronson on April 22 at 6:00 p.m. Professor Aronson, who has written and lectured extensively on the Holocaust, is a visiting scholar at the Library of Congress. The lecture, co-sponsored by the Library's Office of Scholarly Programs and the Embassy of Israel, will be held in the Librarian's Reception Room (LJ 119) in the Thomas Jefferson Building, 10 First Street S.E. The lecture is open to the public, but reservations are required and can be made by calling (202) 707-1616. In addition to the lecture, the Library will commemorate the founding of the Israel in 1948 through an exhibition of Judaica, slated to open on Sept.

 During the invasion the U.S. Capitol and the Library of Congress within its walls were destroyed. The Burning of Washington is a selection of the History Book Club. Anthony Pitch is a former broadcast editor for the Associated Press and senior writer in the books division of U.S. News and World Report. His book Chained Eagle, co- authored with Everett Alvarez, was a Military Book Club main selection. The U.S. "His vision of recording a broad cross section of Americans reading their favorite poems has met with heartfelt enthusiasm throughout the country. The Library looks forward to enriching its unique poetry archives with the recordings he selects in his second term." Mr. Pinsky said: "I'm happy to do the job another year, and I look forward to continuing work on the Favorite Poem Project with the help and cooperation of the Library." The Favorite Poem Project is Mr. Pinsky's main undertaking as Laureate. He is choosing 1,200 people to recite their favorite poem on audio and video tape.

 "The goal of our bicentennial is to inspire creativity by stimulating greater use, not only of the Library of Congress, but also of all libraries," said Ms. Jenkins. "Roberta Stevens's extensive experience in working with outside groups in promoting the Library of Congress will give our commemoration a real boost. Since 1992 she has organized the Library's exhibit booth at the national meetings of the American Library Association, and this year she is coordinating the extensive Library of Congress involvement and participation in the association's national conference here in Washington." Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Stevens served as special assistant to the associate librarian for Cultural Affairs (1990-1995), customer services officer for the Library's Cataloging Distribution Service (1985-1989), and associate director of technical operations at the Fairfax (Va.)
