 The mission of the Library's Preservation Directorate is to preserve these collections for future generations. Founded in 1972, the preservation program has trained innumerable distinguished scientists, conservators and other experts in the preservation field; the program is also open to interns from all over the world, who learn while working with the Library's professional staff. Many of the methods developed at the Library have become standard procedures in libraries and archives worldwide. The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress was established in 1977 to stimulate public interest in books, reading and libraries and to encourage the study of the book as an artifact, art form and means of communication. Its projects are supported by contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations. James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress, has named Kenneth E. Lopez director of security for the Library of Congress.

 The group will also perform Mr. Raimi's arrangement of Mozart's Variations in C major on Ah, vous dirai-je Maman!, Schmann's Quintet in E-flat major, Op. 44, and Bloch's Quintet No. 1. All Library of Congress concerts are free, but tickets are required. They will be distributed at 6 p.m. the evening of the performance in the lobby of the Terrace Theater. Richard W. Clement, author of The Book in America, with Images from the Library of Congress, will speak at the Library at noon on Wednesday, March 5. Sponsored by the Center for the Book, the presentation will take place in the Mumford Room on the sixth floor of the James Madison Memorial Building. It is open to the public. Published last year by Fulcrum Publishing in cooperation with the Library, The Book in America tells the story of the book in the United States from 1638 to today.

 American Memory is a project of the National Digital Library Program of the Library of Congress, which is aiming to make available over the Internet millions of the Library's unique American history collections. Already, more than two dozen collections are available, ranging from Civil War photographs of Mathew Brady and short films of Thomas Edison to documents relating to slavery and the civil rights movement and women's suffrage. On Feb. 15, 100 years ago, the U.S.S. Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor by an explosion that killed more than 250 men. The incident led to the Spanish-American War. A not widely known fact relating to the war is that it is the first U.S. war in which the motion picture camera played a role.  Since 1992, the foundation has made 59 such grants. In addition to strengthening the project in the states already participating -- Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas -- the Center for the book hopes to extend the project to other states with large rural populations.
