If you're fired as a result of sticking to your contractual hours, Australia has the Fair Work Act stopping that and the company would be in trouble. It's good for American employees to get to know their working rights more. Just remember that organizations are terrified of Unions, so who really has the upper hand? This is like hell week for the military, only it goes on for yrs usually. Medical residents are notable for the long hrs also. The intent is to build resiliency and force the growth of capability in all cases. For MDs and soldiers I can see the importance, for number crunchers, less so. Extreme long hours can breed sloppy work and destroy happiness. This should be reserved for critical roles, as the personal costs of this type of training is high. Who is rewarded for their hard work?
